Herbal Supplements the Scepticism

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010
Many people nowadays are turning to “organics” and “naturals” otherwise known as herbals. The rising popularity of herbal supplements has created a new fad if not a new health lifestyle. But before you join the bandwagon, here are some things you need to know about this mean, “green” dietary supplementing machine.

- What is the difference between a drug and a dietary supplement?

According to the definition set by food and drug administrations in different countries, drugs are chemicals that can prevent, prolong the life, treat other effects of a health condition, improve the quality of life, and/or cure ailments and diseases, or alter the function of any part or chemicals inside the body. These drugs have approved therapeutic claims. For example, paracetamol is a drug given to bring down the body temperature in fever. Ascorbic acid is indicated for the treatment of scurvy. Iron supplements are given to treat mild cases of anemia.

Herbal supplements are not classified as drugs but as dietary supplements. The main difference is that they do not have approved therapeutic claims unlike in the case of drugs. Moreover, dietary supplements could either contain vitamins, minerals, herbals, or amino acids, all aimed to add to or supplement the diet of an individual. They are not intended to be taken alone as a substitute to any food or medicine.

Most of the manufactured medicines we now have once came from animals and plants. Through the years, chemists isolated the life-saving or life-curing components and separated them from the harmful ones. This lead to the further drug research and drug development that lead to the production of a different variety of drugs for many ailments and conditions from synthetic sources. But still we have semi-synthetic drugs, as well as drug that more or less approximate more natural composition. Since herbal supplements are made from a mixture of crude herbs reduced into powder or gel form, and later on packaged as tablets and capsules, there is a possibility that life-threatening or at least body chemistry-altering components are still present, thus the expression of concern from the medical community.

- Is there a growing concern with the use of herbal supplements?

Yes. With the rising popularity of using and consuming anything herbal or organic is the proliferation of fake herbal supplements that threaten to endanger lives. If that’s the case, then why are herbal supplements given drug administration approvals? One way of ensuring the safety of the people is to have all candidate drugs, food, drinks, and dietary supplements registered with the proper authority. Otherwise, they would pose more risk with these things being sold in the black market for a hefty sum. We could ensure the quality and safety of herbal supplements if they get proper classification with the food and drug administration. Moreover, people may be able to file the proper complaints in the event a worsening of health condition is proven to be linked to the use of a particular herbal supplement.

- Is using herbal supplements worth the risk?

Yes. It cannot be discounted that many who have tried herbal supplements experienced an improvement in their health—whether this is due to the herbals themselves or due to a placebo effect, as long as they do not worsen the condition of an individual, then using them is worth the risk. But of course, certain things must be considered before taking those herbal supplements:

- Your doctor knows best.

First of all, clear your condition with your doctor. Ask him/her if taking a particular herbal supplement is safe given your health condition. People with heart, liver, or kidney trouble or malfunction, are usually not advised to take these, or at the minimum is to take these herbals in minimum amounts. All substances pass through the liver and kidney to be processed and filtered respectively. Kava, which is used to relieve people from stress, has been pulled out from the Canadian, Singaporean, and German markets because it contains substances that cause liver damage. Certain herbals such as Ephedra used for losing weight, contains chemicals with heart-inducing effects that can increase heart rate, which in turn can exhaust the heart and cause heart attacks in several documented cases by the American Medical Association.

- Follow the directions for use.

Never take more herbal supplements than what is directed by the doctor or as instructed on the bottle. Each individual reacts differently to the components of herbal supplements. While it is perfectly safe for one individual to take in a supplement of primrose oil capsules, another person may be allergic to it. So, do not even think about downing one bottle of

- It has no approved curative effect.

No matter how the product pamphlet or the label of the bottle sounds about how it has been found to be helpful in certain health conditions, these herbal supplements are not therapeutic. So do not substitute these for the medications prescribed by your doctor for the treatment of certain diseases, or for the maintenance of blood pressure, lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol, and fight off infections.

The Upsurgence of the Sun Mushroom

Sunday, February 7th, 2010
Agaricus Blazei Murill, to be more historically accurate, is actually called ‘Agaricus Subrufescens’.

Among traditional folk medicine (especially Chinese), mushrooms have been documented to be in use against disease for over 2 millennia, perhaps much longer. Modern science has allowed for increased research into their use as nutraceuticals. Several groups have been testing for the effectiveness of a variety of mushrooms for decades on everything from the immune system and tumors to erectile dysfunction.

Scientific Information about Agaricus Blazei Murill:

* Kingdom: Fungi

* Subkingdom: Dikarya

* Phylum: Basidiomycota

* Subphylum: Agaricomycotina

* Class: Agaricomycetes

* Order: Agaricales

* Family: Agaricaceae

* Genus: Agaricus

* Species: A. Subrufescens

The genus Agaricus of fungi is probably the most well-known and has been in common use throughout the world, both in the wild and on our pizzas. Some of the most famous members include the ‘button’ and the Portobello; however, an African relative (Agaricus Aurantioviolaceus) is poisonous. Be safe and know your mushrooms.

Though widely cultivated in Japan and called ‘Himematsutake’, in its native habitat Brazil it is best known as ‘Cogumelo de Sola’ (Mushroom of the Sun). Since the 1970’s (perhaps even earlier) it has been marketed using a variety of names purporting its greatness, though Agaricus Blazei Murill has only been artificially cultivated in commercial farms in Asia and South America since the early 1990’s (which has drastically lowered its price).

Agaricus Blazei Murill has been especially noted for reducing the levels of blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose and the effects of arteriosclerosis. The potential benefits of helping to fight off the cell metastasis of uterine cancer by way of increasing the production of interferon and interleukin is too impressive to overlook and warrants further testing. It is known to contain at least 3 beta-glucans (polysaccharide-protein complexes).

Advocates of medicinal mushrooms claim that these polysaccharides have potent compounds that both stimulate and boost the immune system. Polysaccharides can be found in the cell walls of mushrooms which are composed of chitin. In its natural form chitin is unfortunately not easily digestible by humans.

Heating has been the only way to release the active compounds into a form that is properly concentrated and digestible. Thusly, Agaricus Blazei Murill mushrooms up until now, were only prepared with water and heat (as in a tea or a concoction) and were neither used in the un-extracted form (like dried mushroom powder) nor as a tincture soaked in alcohol without heat.

Many companies offer dehydrated mushroom supplements (some even combined with black pepper extract) that are activated by being heated in water or alcohol. It has a semi-sweet flavor and an odor similar to almonds (due to benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzonitrile, and methyl benzoate). Most suggest not more than 3 times weekly and skipping the 3rd week of every month or only as often as recommended by your health care provider.

The hybridization of mushroom species is not a new concept, though a US patent has recently been issued to a company for a cross-breed with increased potency. If you haven’t already, soon you will likely see more medicinal mushroom supplements on the market.

High Blood Pressure Herbal Treatment – 5 Secrets That Could Normalize Hypertension Naturally

Saturday, December 5th, 2009
One of the fastest growing treatments for hypertension is high blood pressure herbal treatments. The recent jump in this natural treatment is possibly from the rise of high blood pressure cases or because people are fed up with the side effects associated with the costly prescriptions.

Whatever the reason, you might want to write down these 5 secrets that could save you and your loved ones from the silent killer disease and the thousands of dollars you will pay over the next few years.

Why High Blood Pressure Medications are NOT the Answer

Recent figures from the American Heart Association (AHA), stated that about 65 million Americans over the age of 20 have high blood pressure. Which means that one and three adults suffer from the disease. More unfortunately, only about 63 percent of those with high blood pressure are aware they have it.

And those who are aware are usually medicated with synthetic drugs to normalize their pressure. And most of these people will be advised to stay on these harmful prescriptions for the rest of their side-effect ridden lives.

However, just recently a government agency has decided to lower the threshold for normalized blood pressure. With the new figures, millions of people who thought they were normalized are now ‘pre-hypertension’. And how can they do this?

High blood pressure is called the ’silent killer’ because it literally has no warning signs or symptoms. Unfortunately, the first sign of the disease is a heart attack. Therefore, instead of treating the numbers; you should consider naturally lowering your blood pressure naturally with simple alternative remedies.

Here are some researched and proven solutions for an alternative treatment.

5 Alternative Treatments for Hypertension

1. Selenium – Selenium, zinc and copper are helpful nutrients. Studies have shown the people with heart disease are often deficient of these nutrients. You can either supplement (a good multi-vitamin) or find these nutrients in your diet. Selenium comes from meat, dark greens, wheat, walnuts and Brazil nuts. Zinc is found in meat, dairy, and beans. Copper is found in seafood, nuts, legumes, and leafy dark greens.

2. Beta Glucan – Beta Glucan is beneficial for lowering cholesterol, which can lower blood pressure if you have high cholesterol. It is found in oat bran and maitake mushrooms. It is particularly helpful for moving waste materials out of the body. We suggest 200 milligrams of oat bran, or about one teaspoon, daily to lower cholesterol and normalize pressure.

3. L-Argine – L-Argine has been in the news recently because a study found that taking 2 grams of L-argine daily reduced systolic pressure 20 points after taking the supplement for just 2 days. It is an amino acid that helps the body produce nitric acid which lowers blood pressure and cholesterol.

4. Fish Oil – Fish oil which is known as Omega 3 fatty acid is very helpful for sufferers. Fish oil protects the heart and lowers blood pressure. You might also want to try flaxseed oil if you are a vegetarian. A recent study has shown that consuming just a tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily lowered both blood pressure numbers by 9 points.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar has been popularized by many elderly who swear upon it. The reason why apple cider vinegar is effective for lowering your score is because it is high in so many vitamins and nutrients that are helpful for lowering high blood pressure. It includes vitamins C, A, E, B1, B2, and B6, in addition to potassium, magnesium, and copper. We recommend mixing 2 tablespoons with a glass of water. Add some honey for better taste.

And this is just a tip of our pyramid of research!

No More Insomnia Thanks to This Natural Supplement

Saturday, August 15th, 2009
“deprivation .

Insomnia might produce several issues during the day, for instance, insomniacs (people who suffer from insomnia) feel extreme sleepiness and exhaustion. Indeed, it becomes hard for them to focus on their daily tasks and even some of them can develop depression and anxiety.

Types of insomnia

There are three types of insomnia: Short term, chronic and intermittent.

• Short term insomnia: Insomniac cannot sleep well during short periods (from just one night to two weeks)

• Intermittent insomnia: Problems for sleeping occurs from time to time.

• Chronic insomnia: Happens 3 times a week during a month or longer.

Of the three, the most difficult to relieve is Chronic insomnia. This type of insomnia can be produced by several causes such as: health conditions like asthma or arthritis, the use of some drugs, passing through periods of intense stress or depression, or even by the atmosphere on which we sleep (like a room where there is too much light or noise, or a bed partner who makes noise from snoring.)

On the other side, you must understand that sleep quality is not about how many hours you sleep. Usually people sleep from 7 to 8 hours. However, sleep quality refers to how well you rest during sleep time. Thus, the most important issue to find an effective insomnia treatment is to make sure that we can sleep comfortably, quietly and without interruptions the whole night.

How can we do that?

There are many ways to sleep better but not all of them are equally effective or safe. Some people try alleviating illnesses or mental health issues that don’t allow them to have enough sleep with a relaxation therapy. Some others prefer to change their habits like quitting drinking alcohol or caffeine at night or trying to go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday. In the same direction, specialists recommend making your sleep environment to a quiet place, and you can achieve this by wearing a sleeping mask or earplugs if light and noise bother you. However, if you have tried all these recommendations without any improvement in your sleep, you must try to get insomnia relief with the natural supplement Sleepatil.

Sleepatil is an herbal supplement that encourages your body to naturally keep a normal sleep pattern because it allows your body to relax, and stimulates you to fall and stay asleep. Besides, this natural sleep aid does not have addictive properties; also, Sleepatil allows you to have a great sleep without having any harmful side effects. Natural Supplements for Rosacea

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009
Rosacea is a common face rash of adults. It is an inflammatory disease of the skin, which is estimated to affect over 45 million people worldwide. Rosacea begins with people in their 30’s and may last into late middle age (around age 60). Rosacea is about 3 times more common in females and may seem to be associated with peri-menopause in some cases. It is also more common in fair-skinned people of Celtic or Scandinavian decent.

Rosacea is often made worse by cold weather, hot beverages, and stress.

Many people have been looking for natural treatments to reduce the appearance of rosacea. While rosacea cannot be cured, its symptoms may be controlled with various all natural extracts & oils that are now featured in many over the counter products.

One natural treatment that has shown the ability to reduce rosacea is green tea extract. Women treated with a special topical green tea extract cream had a 70% improvement in rosacea compared with women treated with a placebo. The study was conducted by Tanweer Syed, MD, PhD, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of San Francisco. The study showed that women who had redness, pustules, bums, and blood vessels that were visible showed significant improvement when they applied the green tea cream twice daily.

Another all-natural treatment for Rosacea is Evening Primrose Oil. Various essential fatty acids found in Evening Primrose Oil help treat rosacea by reducing inflammation, controlling cells’ use of nutrients and by producing prostaglandins, which stimulate the contraction of blood vessels.

Sea Buckthorn Oil has a long history of use in Asia and the Far East as a primary healing agent. It grows in the mountainous regions of Russia and China. Sea Buckthorn Oil contains Vitamin C & E, which has effective anti-inflammatory properties. The oil also contains oils rich in essential fatty acids which have been shown to soothe the skin & reduce redness commonly seen in many rosacea cases.

The Benefits of Natural Supplements

Sunday, May 31st, 2009
Natural supplements are dietary additives that are derived from naturally occurring substances, such as herbal supplements. Although herbal supplements are a type of natural supplement, not all natural supplements are made with herbs. In fact, those made with minerals, vitamins, amino acids, or a combination of these items may also be considered natural supplements.

There are many benefits that are associated with using supplements. Unfortunately, many of these benefits are overlooked by medical professionals and natural supplements are not appreciated for all that they have to offer. For those that are looking for an alternative method of treating and preventing illness, however, they are becoming increasingly more popular.

Enjoy Ease of Use

Since natural supplement are safe to use and since most do not remain in the body for a long period of time, there are very few special rule to follow when using them. For example, you usually do not have to worry about overdosing on natural substances or about experiencing negative side effects.

Due to the fact that they are safe to use, you do not need to have a prescription to obtain them. Therefore, getting supplements is easier and generally less expensive than getting prescription medications, many of which can have dangerous or otherwise harmful effects on your body.

Taking it Easy on Your Body

Another great benefit to using supplements is that they are kinder to your body. Unlike over-the-counter and prescription medications, they usually work with your body systems and help them to be more effective. Many over-the-counter and prescription medications, on the other hand, actually change your bodily functions and can cause quite a shock to your system.

Prevent Illnesses

Many natural supplements can also be used to help prevent illness rather than treat it. Whereas modern medicine typically functions by treating illnesses after they occur, the focus on the use of natural supplements is more on preventing illness rather than treating it. Of course, these supplements can be used to treat illness as well. Nonetheless, with a well planned out diet containing natural supplements, you can enjoy a higher level of health and wellness.

Although there are many benefits associated with the use of natural supplements, it is still important to discuss your plans to use these supplements with a medical professional. In order to make sure you are getting the best advice, make sure to work with a homeopathic or chiropractic professional. In this way, you can make sure to create the best possible plan for you.

Natural Supplements: The Benefits of Liquid Cellular Zeolite

Friday, April 10th, 2009
Although Zeolite is a relatively new discovery in the world of alternative medicine, this mineral is already making waves in the homeopathic community. Derived from volcanic rock, Zeolite has a number of great benefits that are continually being explored by alternative medicine practitioners.

Cleansing the Body

The best known and most widely recognized benefit of using Zeolite is the fact that it can remove toxins and heavy metals from the body. This is made possible by the fact that Zeolite is able to attract positive minerals such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, and iron. Heavy metals, such as mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and nickel, then displace the minerals and are easily removed from the body.

Restoring Alkaline pH

Another benefit to using Zeolite is its ability to restore alkaline pH. By having a less acidic body system, you are less likely to suffer from disease. In fact, many diseases, including cancer, cannot grow in a body that is alkaline. Therefore, Zeolite can effectively treat and prevent disease by helping to transform the system to a more alkaline and healthier state.

One disease that appears to particularly well treated by Zeolite is Hepatitis. Although Zeolite has not been proven effective in treatment of Hepatitis, many medical professionals have seen its positive effects on those suffering from the illness. Dr. Alex Lee from California, for example, has conducted studies on people with Hepatitis C and the use of Zeolite.

“We’re looking at a study of patients for example with Hepatitis C using activated Zeolite,” Dr. Lee says. “and, just as an anecdotal testimonial, the very first person that we enrolled dropped their Hepatitis C viral load from 10 million to 7 million after six weeks of taking activated Zeolite.”

Relaxing the Digestive System

For those with irritable bowel syndrome or other issues that cause diarrhea, Zeolite can also bring about relief. The reasons for its effectiveness in treating diarrhea is not fully understood, though Zeolite’s ability to increase antioxidant activity and to reduce free radicals likely plays a large role in this benefit.

Even if you are not experiencing problems with your digestive system, the cleansing properties of Zeolite will go a long way toward helping you achieve a higher level of wellness. In turn, you will experience more energy, clearer thinking, and an overall improved feeling of well-being.

The best part about using Zeolite is that it is 100% natural and safe to use. In fact, it was recently placed on the FDA’s GRAS list, which means it is Generally Recognized As Safe and will not cause you any harm or result in troubling side effects. So, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain when you take advantage of the natural powers of Zeolite!

Natural Cures and Natural Supplements

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
These are the treatments and natural supplements that your traditional medical doctor will not, or can’t discuss. Maybe they just do not know enough about them. Or maybe it’s because it’s just easier to write a prescription, and get you on more medication, which in turn could lead to side effects, and more medication to cure the side effects. It really is a vicious circle sometimes!

Now by no means am I here to tell you that there is no room in this world for doctor prescribed medications or procedures. With the advances of modern science, they are saving peoples lives everyday, and that should not ever stop.

There must be balance, a synergy, between modern medicine and natural supplements. Just like science is finding new cures and treatments for disease and ailments like arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and many more, science is also proving the abilities and benefits of many natural products that have been around for hundreds of years.

Unless you go see a naturopath or holistic doctor, you will probably never hear of these natural remedies. That’s because ‘old school’ doctors are just that, ‘old school’ and do not believe in the natural approach to healing. They are either, misinformed, not educated or just plain don’t care about the alternatives. The ‘big pharma’ still control the way most medical doctors think and act! Just ask someone who was sick and had a doctor visit. They usually say that the first thing the doctor wants to do is prescribe some kind of medication, that’s just the way they have done things in the past, and continue to do so.

So this leaves you to do the investigating and discovery of natural ways to give our body the fuel or ammunition it needs to heal itself. There is a ton of great dietary supplements out there that a vast number of people are having success with. With the help of the internet, it’s easier now more then ever to find the information you seek.

There is also a lot of false claims and bogus products that you must be aware of. Because the natural health industry is not regulated, like the FDA regulates the pharmaceutical industry, people and companies make outrageous claims about their products, and most get away with it. In Canada, there has been a ‘natural health food’ act proposed, that if passed, would regulate products just like the FDA does with pharmacueticals. That would mean that if a company makes a claim as far as what their product will treat or cure, they must back it up with substantial scientific studies. In other words, they have to have the proof. That would get rid of all the false claims and bogus supplements that just don’t work, and save people a lot of time and money!

Do your research, ask people you know and trust if they supplement their diet. and you will be successful in finding a high quality natural alternative to prescription drugs.
